Global climate change will have substantial impacts on the environment, including land and water resources for agriculture. We are looking for a resourceful and inventive professional to conduct applied research to develop strategies to conserve and optimize water and energy use in irrigated agriculture.
The optimal goal of this position is to provide crop production and water management solutions to irrigation districts and irrigators to improve the utilization of southern Alberta's limited and precious water resources. Your vital role will be to help producers with irrigation technology, and develop strategies and understanding of how climate change affects water supplies as they pertain to irrigation, with the goal of improved irrigation efficiency and profitability of crop production with climate change. With your strong relationships within industry and detailed knowledge of irrigation equipment, you will coordinate the
Growing Forward 2 Irrigation Efficiency Program
including grant applications and payments, reporting and research.
Using your skills in collaboration, you will work closely with scientists and agronomists from the Irrigation and Farm Water and the Crop Research and Extension Divisions of Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, producer organizations and industry commodity groups to evaluate irrigation water management options for new cropping alternatives for a warmer, but increasingly water-short climate. Your well-developed presentation skills in technology transfer will be a key element of this position. Superior research, reporting and project leadership capabilities will ensure your success in this role. Contributing to a team of scientists and agronomists within the department, as well as producer organizations and industry commodity groups, the position supports the Water for Life goal that water is managed effectively to support competitive, sustainable economic development.
An M.Sc. degree in agriculture or a related degree, with specialization in soil science, plant science, agronomy or irrigation science and a minimum of three years of related experience or equivalent. Experience with technology transfer methods, field research fundamentals, project planning and implementation is needed. Experience with current and related irrigation water management practices using new & existing equipment is required. Irrigation experimental design, computer modeling, and statistical analysis and interpretation will be considered assets. Eligible for membership with the Alberta Institute of Agrologists (AIA). Equivalencies will be considered. Candidates that do not meet the qualifications may be considered at a lower salary and classification.
$2,420.93 to $3,319.88 bi-weekly ($63,186 to $86,648 annually)
