An exciting opportunity exists to provide guidance to facilitate the growth of Alberta's tourism industry to be a $10.3 billion industry by 2020. The Alberta Strategic Tourism Council is an advisory council accountable to the Minister of Tourism, Parks and Recreation. The Council is comprised of up to 15 community leaders who represent the diversity of Alberta's tourism industry. It is expected that the Council would meet as a whole approximately 4 times per year to discuss and fulfill its mandate.
The Honourable Richard Starke, Minister of Tourism, Parks and Recreation, is seeking applications from individuals interested in serving on the Alberta Strategic Tourism Council. The Council is the Minister's key advisory stakeholder group that is guided by Alberta's Tourism Framework and is responsible for providing strategic tourism advice to the Minister and Travel Alberta. The Council works in partnership with industry bodies and government agencies to provide a strong voice for the tourism industry to support marketing and product development, investment, workforce skills and training to support tourism jobs and businesses.
Representation is being sought to ensure a cross-section of critical skills, regional and sectoral representation including: transportation, food and beverage, accommodations, recreation and sport, cultural, nature-based and agricultural tourism. Excellent communication skills are required. Experience in one or more of the following areas would be an asset: Advisory/Board Council, Senior Management, Financial Control, International/National/ or Regional Tourism Involvement, Local Government Involvement, Marketing, Customer Service, and Marketing Communications.
Appointment of each member of the Council is for a fixed term of up to three (3) years and will be made by Order-in-Council. An honorarium is paid for attending council meetings and expenses for travel to meetings may be reimbursed as per Government of Alberta regulations. Final candidates will be required to undergo a security screening. Applicants are expected to provide a complete resume including the names of three references.
