Reporting to Manager of Planning Policy, the Planning Advisor will work on high priority ministry and cross ministry planning matters such as planning and mitigation considerations in flood hazard areas and other policy initiatives. The position will require a high level of knowledge and experience in land use planning to provide research and analysis on planning issues, develop recommendations to build municipal planning capacity, represent the department and provide planning advice on cross-ministry committees, and advise on the legislative requirements of the Municipal Government Act (MGA) and the other legislation affecting municipal planning. The Planning Advisor is responsible for providing appropriate, prompt, and consistent information to the Ministry, including senior management and the Minister, on matters and/or issues of importance to the operation of the Ministry. This will contribute to effective land use planning for all Albertans.
The successful candidate must be familiar with policy development and implementation, with various pieces of legislation, and with current planning issues, in order to make effective recommendations. Participation in cross-ministry committees will require an appreciation for overall government goals and the relationship of Municipal Affairs' and municipal planning interests to the interest of other departments in order to effectively participate and provide advice. The Planning Advisor will be required to assess existing legislation, regulations, practices and processes, identify gaps and weaknesses in responding to current demands and recommend alternative approaches to meeting needs.
You will be a team player, an exceptional communicator, sensitive to municipal matters, innovative and creative at problem solving, and have substantial knowledge about regional and municipal planning. Your proven project management and leadership skills, excellent written and oral communication, facilitation, and issue resolution skills will assist you in this position. You must be able to work independently, in a team and with external resources.
University degree in a related field such as planning, urban studies, environmental studies, geography, political science etc., with four years of progressively responsible related work experience in land use planning, preferably at the municipal level is required. An excellent working knowledge of the planning part of the Municipal Government Act (MGA) in particular and a general knowledge of other sections of the MGA and related legislation and regulations affecting municipal planning are required. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite is also required. Membership in the Alberta Professional Planners Institute is an asset. Equivalencies will be considered.
$ 2,596.42 to $ 3,403.56 biweekly.
The ability to travel and work irregular hours, including evening and weekends may be required. This competition may be used to fill future vacancies across the province. Candidates with lesser qualifications may be considered at a lower level of classification and salary.
