Justice and Solicitor General
Alberta Justice and Solicitor General's Legal Services Division is responsible for providing quality legal and strategic advice to government. Within the Division, our Central Services Team provides solicitor services to a variety of ministries within the Government of Alberta. Our solicitors are exposed to a wide range of legal work and have opportunities to work with different ministries. The work we do is interesting, important and ever changing.
We are seeking a junior solicitor to assist with a wide range of tax-related legal matters involving the Government of Alberta. An aptitude and interest in becoming a tax specialist is essential, as well as at least some familiarity with tax law.
The successful applicant will join a team of lawyers who provide legal and related strategic services to Alberta Treasury Board and Finance; the important responsibilities of this position will involve interacting with various Government Departments and agencies. The varied work within the tax field will include matters relating to compliance with federal tax legislation (including GST), withholdings, objections, contracts, and various Alberta laws.
The ideal candidate will have some experience in the tax field, as well as a knowledge of government and some familiarity with a wide range of financial, commercial and corporate law.
Success in this position will require
- an aptitude for tax and a strong client focus,
- excellent communication skills, both written and oral,
- an eye for detail, coupled with an ability to grasp bigger-picture issues, and
- excellent interpersonal skills and a team orientation.
LLB, practicing member or eligible for membership with the Law Society of Alberta and up to 4 years of related legal experience. Preference will be given to candidates who have relevant experience in tax law.
$2,929.70 - $3,775.61 bi - weekly
This competition may be used to fill future permanent and temporary vacancies. Final candidates for this position may be asked to provide writing samples, and/or participate in a second interview. Final candidates will be required to undergo a security screening.
