The Health Protection Branch is responsible for the core Public Health functions of Health Protection including Disaster and Emergency Preparedness, Infection Prevention and Control, Environmental Public Health, and Outbreak Management. Health Protection involves actions, often using a regulatory framework, to protect individuals and communities against risks to health and safety. The Branch plays a major role in maintaining the department's legislation, standards, guidelines and policies and supports several federal/provincial/cross-ministry initiatives to ensure that public health protection is given due consideration.

Are you a highly motivated individual who is looking for an opportunity to support the development and implementation of environmental public health policies and strategies? The Health Protection Branch within the Family and Population Health Division has an exciting opportunity for a Policy Advisor.
Reporting to the Director of Environmental Public Health, the Policy Advisor will provide policy development expertise, and project planning and management on various environmental public health issues and initiatives, and contribute support and advice to internal and cross-ministry initiatives and external groups.
To be successful in this role, you will have an extensive knowledge of policy development processes, environmental public health issues, risk management strategies and frameworks, knowledge of government structures and processes, and the Government of Alberta regulatory review process. Your excellent communication and interpersonal skills will assist you in building effective collaborations with a wide variety of stakeholders during the policy development process. Strong project management, problem solving and strategic thinking skills, and exceptional policy analysis and written communication skills will ensure you are successful in meeting the challenges of this position.
A post-secondary degree in environmental health sciences, public health, public policy or administration, or related area(s) is required. A minimum of 4 years related experience is required, related experience includes work in policy development, stakeholder consultation, qualitative research, environmental or public health monitoring and assessment, and/or risk management. Equivalencies considered.
$2,596.42 to $3,403.56 bi-weekly ($67,766 to $88,832 per annum)
This is a temporary, full-time, two-year position expected to expire on or before June 30, 2015. Secondment opportunities will be considered. Candidates with lesser qualifications may be considered at a lower level.
