Justice and Solicitor General
The Criminal Justice Division prosecutes persons charged with Criminal Code, Youth Criminal Justice Act, and some provincial statute offences. The division promotes safe communities by vigorously prosecuting cases involving serious and violent crime and working with individuals and organizations in the community to identify and implement improved and alternative approaches to the administration of criminal justice. In addition, the division develops criminal law policy for the province and supports criminal law consultation with other levels of government.
Alberta Justice and Solicitor General have a temporary opportunity for a Paralegal to join our Crown Prosecutors Office in Fort McMurray.
As a paralegal, you work independently with the Crown Prosecutors and are responsible for organizing and managing large complex litigation files. Your extensive legal experience, preferably in criminal law, allows you to prepare memoranda, complex legal documents, reports, executive briefings and case summaries. You have extensive liaison responsibilities and are often the primary contact between prosecutors and police agencies, defense counsel, witnesses, victims and other stakeholders.
With responsibilities regarding disclosure issues, prosecutor scheduling and diarizing, your sound judgment and organization skills are invaluable assets. Your thorough knowledge of file management and excellent legal research skills enable you to offer advice to prosecutors on the conduct of files from inception to conclusion.
The successful candidate has exceptional time-management and organizational skills. Knowledge of various acts and legislation including the Criminal Code, Canada Evidence Act, Jury Act and Provincial and Federal Victims of Crime Legislation are essential.
Post-Secondary education in a related field coupled with five years of progressively related experience. Considerable related paralegal experience or a demonstrated ability to do paralegal work is required. Criminal law experience is preferred. Equivalencies will be considered.
$2,462.53 to $3,051.15 bi-weekly ($64,272 to $79,635 annually)
This is a one year temporary position.
Fort McMurray Allowance of $478.17 per bi-weekly pay period in addition to regular earnings is provided. You may be eligible for an attraction bonus which is a one-time payment equivalent to 25% of base pay upon commencement.
Candidates with lesser qualifications may be considered at a lower classification and salary.
Final candidates will be asked to undergo security screening. This competition may be used to fill future permanent, and temporary, full and part time vacancies.
